Harmattan Pet Care: How to Keep Dogs and Cats Healthy in Nigeria
Harmattan is coming very fast; it is almost here, and it comes with dusty air, dry weather, and cooler mornings to much of Nigeria. Knowing the season is fast coming, you're already adjusting your own routine for the season; your pets need the same consideration.
Just like humans, dogs and cats can experience changes in their skin, coat, and general comfort during dry, dusty weather.
Dust irritates sensitive eyes and airways. Cooler nights change how comfortable an outdoor resting area feels. Changes in routine affect how much a pet drinks.
None of this is dramatic, but all of it is worth paying attention to. The adjustments you need to make are not that complicated; it is simple and easy. Here's what actually helps.
1. Keep Your Pet's Sleeping Area Clean and Comfortable
Start by looking at where your pet sleeps. If your dog or cat spends any time outdoors, they need access to a dry, sheltered spot protected from wind and dust. Indoor pets benefit from a dedicated resting area away from drafts and high-traffic spaces.
Wash bedding regularly. Harmattan dust settles quickly on fabric, and it accumulates faster than it looks. Clean the floor and corners around the sleeping area where dust collects. If the resting spot is directly on a cold or hard floor, appropriate bedding that's easy to wash makes a real difference.
One thing to avoid: dressing pets in heavy clothing simply because the morning feels cold to you. A pet's comfort needs depend on their age, coat type, health, and environment. Puppies, kittens, elderly pets, and animals with health conditions may need closer monitoring, but what feels cold to you may not feel cold to a healthy adult dog with a full coat.
The goal is a clean, dry, comfortable resting space with room for your pet to move away if they get too warm.
Your pet's sleeping space should be comfortable, clean, and appropriate for its size and needs. If you're unsure what type of shelter or resting space to choose, read our guide on How to Choose the Right Pet Cage, Kennel, or House for Your Pet before making a decision.
2. Pay Attention to Skin and Coat
Dry weather can contribute to flaky skin or coat changes in some pets, but dry skin isn't always caused by weather. Allergies, parasites, infections, and nutritional issues can all look similar.
Regular, gentle grooming is the most practical first step. Brush your dog's coat according to their coat type. Brush your cat regularly to remove loose hair and debris. Grooming also gives you a chance to notice things you might otherwise miss: unusual flaking, redness, bald patches, wounds, or parasites.
Avoid bathing your pet more often than necessary. Frequent bathing, hot water, and the wrong shampoos can affect and strip protective skin oils and cause irritation. When a bath is needed, use a product made for that specific animal.
Don't apply human body lotion, essential oils, or homemade skin treatments without checking with a vet first. What's harmless for humans can be irritating or toxic if licked for pets, so be careful.
If your pet starts experiencing continuous itching, flaking, redness, hair loss, sores, or an unusual odor that doesn't resolve, arrange a vet check. Don't assume Harmattan is responsible; it may not be. Check with your vet.
3. Reduce Dust Exposure Where You Can
Dust is one of the most unavoidable features of harmattan in Nigeria, and it settles everywhere, floors, furniture, bedding, and outdoor surfaces.
Keep your pet's resting area clean. Sweep or wipe it down regularly, wash bedding, and keep your pet away from particularly dusty areas when practical. When you're cleaning, let dust settle before letting your pet back into the space.
After outdoor walks, check your dog's paws and coat for dust and debris. A clean, slightly damp cloth can remove surface dirt when appropriate, but avoid rubbing dust deeper into the coat or directing it toward your pet's face.
Cats that go outside may bring dust back in. Regular brushing and a clean resting area help.
Watch for symptoms, not just dust. Continuous coughing, wheezing, eye irritation, or unusual nasal discharge should be discussed with a vet. Breathing difficulty is an emergency and needs immediate veterinary attention; don't wait to see if it improves.
4. Keep Fresh Water Available All Day
Hydration matters year-round. Even when the weather feels cooler, your pet still needs continuous access to clean drinking water.
Ensure to put water bowls where your dog or cat can reach them easily. Refresh the water regularly, and wash the bowls; dirt, dust, and residue build up faster than you might expect. In multi-pet homes, provide enough drinking spots so that one pet can't block another from accessing water.
Cats are often particular about water. If your cat rarely uses its bowl, try keeping an additional bowl somewhere quiet and away from the litter tray. Some cats prefer wider bowls; some respond better to a pet fountain. Preferences vary by individual.
You can ask your vet if incorporating wet food or adding water to meals is appropriate for your pet's situation. Water needs vary based on size, activity level, diet, and health.
Watch for changes in drinking habits. A pet that suddenly drinks more or less than usual, especially alongside vomiting, reduced appetite, unusual tiredness, or changes in urination, deserves a vet visit.
Keeping fresh water available is a good start, but it's equally important to understand how much your pet may need and how to encourage regular drinking. 5. Adjust Outdoor Activities When Needed
Your dog still needs walks, play, and outdoor time during Harmattan. The key is adapting to actual conditions instead of just applying a blanket rule.
If the air is particularly dusty or your dog seems uncomfortable outside, a shorter walk and more indoor play is a better alternative. Choose less dusty routes when you can. Bring water if you'll be out for any length of time.
Watch how your individual dog responds. Shivering, repeatedly trying to head home, lifting paws repeatedly off the ground, or appearing unusually uncomfortable are all signs worth paying attention to.
For cats, supervised outdoor time or an indoor play routine can reduce unnecessary dust exposure while keeping them mentally stimulated.
Don't assume every pet needs the same protection. A healthy adult dog with a thick coat handles cool, dusty conditions very differently from a short-haired dog, a young puppy, or an elderly animal.
6. Maintain Good Nutrition and Store Food Properly
Your pet still needs a complete, balanced diet appropriate for their life stage. Harmattan isn't a reason to make sudden dietary changes or start adding supplements without veterinary advice.
Food storage becomes more important during dry, dusty conditions. Keep dry pet food in a cool, dry place, sealed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use an airtight container where practical. Don't leave food exposed to dust, moisture, pests, or direct sunlight.
Check food before serving. Discard anything that looks or smells wrong, dampness, mold, or unusual color. Follow product instructions for storing opened wet food.
Keep your pet's feeding routine as consistent as possible. If your pet suddenly refuses food, seems unusually tired, or develops digestive symptoms, don't automatically attribute it to the weather. Something else may be happening.
7. Know When to Contact a Veterinarian
Home care handles the everyday. But it's not a substitute for professional attention when something is actually wrong.
Contact your vet if you notice:
- Continuous itching, redness, flaking, or hair loss
- Repeated coughing, sneezing, or eye irritation
- A noticeable change in appetite or drinking habits
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual tiredness
- Changes in urination or other unusual behavior
Seek urgent veterinary help for:
- Breathing difficulty
- Collapse or severe weakness
- Rapidly worsening symptoms
Don't give human medication or use leftover veterinary medicine without professional guidance.
The timing of Harmattan doesn't mean the weather is responsible for everything you notice. Many of these symptoms have multiple possible causes, a vet can help identify what's actually going on.
Your Harmattan Pet-Care Checklist
A simple reference to keep your routine on track:
- Clean, dry, and comfortable resting area
- Regular dust removal from bedding and frequently used spaces
- Routine brushing; check skin and coat for changes
- Fresh drinking water available at all times
- Outdoor activities adjusted to dust and weather conditions
- Pet food stored properly and a balanced diet maintained
- Watch for changes in breathing, appetite, drinking, urination, or behavior
You don't need an entirely new routine for Harmattan. Consistent daily care and attention to what's changing in your pet is what makes the real difference.
